TRUTH & LIES

“The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.”

What is the cost of lies? It’s not that we will mistake them for the truth. The real danger is that if we hear enough lies then we no longer recognise the truth at all. Adolf Hitler said, ‘If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.’ What can we do then? The thing about truth is that it’s not dependent on anything. It has its own purity, something that can not be changed irrespective of  how many lies stand against it.

Many have tried to change it and manipulate it but any man who thinks for himself, without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos, will see right through these manipulations. In fact, to accept the truth a person requires a great deed of courage. Because truth isn’t always what we want it to be, but its always what we needed it to be. Having an unfavourable truth results in us trying to cover it up and for that we resort to lies.

Lies. At best, overlooked. At worst, the key to destruction. The thing about a lie is that it cannot stand alone. Hence a second lie is required and then the third and it never stops. Lies give us a sense of security. They make us think that we are out of the reaches of the laws we live under. Then again, no man is rich enough to buy back his past. It is this fear of discovery of the truth that corrupts. Then in desperate measures the cycle of lies start. The bigger they get the more brutally they fall. And they do fall.

Humans have always used lies to manipulate, sell their propaganda and to achieve their selfish motives. It is a noble power and a fearful weakness that we humans will always value trust over the truth  because today it is not truth that matters, but victory. The alarming part being that we subconsciously know the truth from the lie but we are yet convinced into the lie. What does that mean? It shows how our most basic right to decide for ourselves is taken from us due to these lies. That’s how these lies are dangerous. Yet they become part of our's everyday life, and telling a lie feels more natural than telling the truth. It starts off by telling the occasional white lie to avoid hurting someone's feelings or getting in trouble. But the frequency of these lies increase and before we know it we are uses lies to hide our every mistake. In some cases this develops into pathological lying and the person starts living in this imaginary world and lets go off his or her senses and start lying for no apparent reason.

Is it sometimes more noble to tell a small lie that to deliver a painful truth? Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where the truth doesn’t seem like the best option. In the short term these lies might bring comfort and security but the truth is always there. It’s just lay there covered by the lies and every lie we tell incurs a debt to the truth. Sooner or later that debt has to be paid. Maybe it is better to be slapped with he truth than kissed with a lie. Maybe the naked truth is always better than the best dressed lie.

There are two sides to a story and then there is the truth. It is our responsibility to have the understanding and knowledge of this truth. In this search of truth we are so naive we fail to consider how few actually want us to find it. But it is always there, whether we see it or not, wether we choose to or not. The truth doesn’t care about our needs or wants. It doesn’t care about our governments, our ideologies, our religion. It will lie in wait for all time until it is discovered. Yet so many find themselves lost in this search. Maybe it is too powerful for us to handle. So many give into up for other temptation. Sometimes it is the fear of it not being what you expect it to be that will keep you away from it. And in this search of truth some of us give up everything and lay everything on the line. My question is when does this search for truth turn into a wrongful crusade or an unjustified means by which it consumes one completely. So many will oppose it, try to bury it, change it because truth is the treason in an empire of lies. Yet it stays what it is. We might try to change our perception and understanding of the truth but it never changes.

Today it is more important than ever to understand the value of truth. We might not see it but there has been this constant war between the truth and lies. Today the lies are winning and it is up to us how we want our world to be. Do we want to be defined by our truth or our lies? Will our decisions be based on truth or on lies? And the truth isn’t limited to a matter of words. It is what defines equal opportunity, freedom, free speech and a just world. The price of truth will be high but a lie will cost us everything.

XOXO,

Sanch.
